Ladies Island —

The “Fraueninsel”, or “Ladies Island” in English is a beautiful little island (38 acres) on Lake Chiemsee — see Wiki for more information. The Wiki article states: “The island is accessible by ship year round, usually from Gstadt, Prien, and Seebruck.” That’s not exactly true, every once and a while the Chiemsee will freeze in winter and you can walk to the islands over the ice.  There is also a smaller ship that departs from “Feldwies” on the South Eastern corner of the lake. It’s not as well known, so that’s the route we prefer.

In the photos below is a composite of two photos of Feldwies I took from the deck of the ship. I didn’t use a tripod, so it didn’t allign exactly, but for a hand held shot it’s okay.

If the weather is nice, it’s a gorgeous 25 minute trip with views of the lake and mountains. It costs €7.50 round-trip, but if you’re here as a tourist it might make more sense to get an all-day pass for the ships on the Chiemsee.

We like to take a mat and picnic under one of the huge trees on the shore with a view of “Herb Island — Krautinsel” and “Gentlemen Island — Herreninsel” But if you’re a tourist, there are some nice restaurantswhere you can sit in the open under the tress and relax.
